First Halle, Now Katy: Is the 'Flapper Bob' Fall's Hottest Hairstyle? - StyleList
advertising campaign, featuring models Daria Werbowy and Elettra Wiedemann in Daisy Buchanan-like bobs.Next, we admired Halle Berry's short, sleek, similarly-banged bob on the cover of September Vogue. And this weekend, we glimpsed Katy Perry wearing chinese hair a like-minded bob style as papparazzi snapped her at Tokyo's Narita International Airport. Now, all of the above looks are wigs; Werbowy and Wiedemann both have long hair, Berry has kept her coif in a short crop for the past year, and Perry -- who is known for wearing outlandish hair pieces -- is preparing for her upcoming wedding, for which everyone is wagering that she'll keep her locks long. But still, is the "flapper bob" a new trend? The look in question is a short bob with long bangs, reminiscent of the haircut favored by fashionable women in the 1920s. The shortest of the styles, the "Eton Crop" -- which paired a tapered, face-framing cut with lots of slick hair gel -- became popular in the mid 1920s and was favored by icons of full lace wigs the time like Josephine Baker. Considered daring and even shocking, the look evolved by the early 1930s to a softer, wavier look. Celebrity hairstylist Oribe, who styled Berry for the Vogue shoot, confirms he was referencing the iconic era for her look. Werbowy and Wiedemann in Lancome's Fall 2010 advertising campaign. Photo: Mario Testino for Lancome"I was inspired by the clothes for the shoot, which had an Art Deco influence," said Oribe. In the photo shoot, the actress dons long velvet gowns by Giorgio Armani, Marc Jacobs, Vera Wang, and Escada, and stunning jewels by Lorraine Schwartz, Stephen Russell, and Fred Leighton, all adding up to a 1920s luxe effect. "I wanted Halle's hair to be very sharp and direct and not at all bulky. The idea was to get flat, straight hair with soft, moveable bangs to create interest," said Oribe. "Halle has never worn her hair in this type of lace front wigs style, and I was very interested in doing something different," he added. If you're interested in trying out the look yourself, tell your hairdresser that you want a shorter bob. The look will flatter most face shapes, but make sure your stylist modifies the length of the bangs to fit your face. Not sure if this hairstyle is your thing? Find out if short hair will look good on you.
